World Mental Health Day has been celebrated since 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health, a global mental health organization with members in more than 150 countries. Each year, on 10th October, supporters come together to bring attention to mental illness and its major effects on peoples’ lives worldwide.
For 2021, the theme is ‘Mental Health in an Unequal World’. This includes not just how the inequalities of the world have an impact on mental health, but also how mental health care is accessible mainly to the privileged in society.
The gap between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have nots’ grows ever wider and there is continuing unmet need in the care of people with a mental health problem. Furthermore, there is still a stigma attached to mental health issues, which means few actually even accept or voice that they need help.
This inequality needs to be addressed because it should not be allowed to continue. We all have a role to play to address these disparities.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), India’s mental health workforce is severely understaffed. According to the international organisation’s data, there are only three psychiatrists and psychologists for every 1,00,000 people. It has predicted that owing to the pandemic and its influential factors, the number of patients who have any mental disorders would touch 20 per cent in the country.
Mera Mann Foundation is committed to bridge the gap and make HELP available to all. We have a wide group of psychologists, counsellors and therapists on board to offer help to those with mental health issues.
